SYDNEY, Jan 1 AAP - Police are investigating two separate fires that caused extensive damage to a Sydney business and a NSW funeral parlour overnight.

Locals alerted emergency services to a pine furniture factory in Roselands, in Sydney's south-west, that was on fire about 10pm (AEDT) on Wednesday.

The NSW fire brigade spent more than three hours extinguishing the Remley Street blaze.

A number of residents from neighbouring buildings were evacuated because of dense smoke in the area.

They have since returned to their homes.

The cost of damage to the building, including furniture-making materials, is estimated to be more than $1 million.

In another incident at Queanbeyan, emergency services were called to a funeral parlour on Crawford Street, where the rear of the building was engulfed in flames.

Fire-fighters arrived about 2.20am (AEDT) on Thursday, and took about an hour to extinguish the blaze, which damaged a number of vehicles inside the building.

No one was injured in the fire.

Police are still investigating the cause of both fires, and are unsure at this stage if either was deliberately lit
